About SoBLa
Founded in the mid-1980s, SoBLa — the Society for Latin American Biophysicists — began as a small group of colleagues who wanted a shared space to discuss and promote biophysics across Latin America. What started as an informal network has grown into a thriving international society.
Today, SoBLa brings together more than 300 members spanning North America, Latin America, and Europe. Our community includes researchers at every career stage — from graduate students to senior faculty — connected by origin, collaboration, and a shared commitment to strengthening biophysics in the region. Wherever our members live and work, SoBLa remains a home base: a place to stay connected to Latin American science and to each other.

SoBLa's mission rests on three pillars: connect, support, and grow.
We connect Latin American biophysicists across borders and institutions — creating spaces, both in person and online, for the exchange of new ideas and the formation of lasting collaborations. Through conferences, workshops, and informal networks, we help researchers find colleagues who share their scientific interests, no matter where in the world they're based.
We support the next generation of scientists. SoBLa is committed to the career development of young biophysicists in Latin America and abroad — offering travel grants, mentorship opportunities, and platforms to present research to new audiences. We believe that investing in early-career researchers is one of the most powerful ways to strengthen the field for decades to come.
We grow biophysics as a discipline. We champion the fundamental role of biophysics in understanding biological processes, and we work to expand its visibility and impact — both within Latin America and on the global scientific stage. Through partnerships, joint meetings, and shared resources, we aim to ensure that Latin American biophysics continues to thrive and contribute to the broader scientific community.

SoBLa is governed by a council elected directly by our members. These positions are not permanent — leadership rotates periodically, ensuring the society continues to reflect the needs and voices of its community. Like most of what we do, SoBLa runs on the dedication of volunteers who give their time to keep the society active and growing.
Our President serves as the head of the organization, elected every three years to guide SoBLa's overall direction. Our Treasurer manages the society's finances, ensuring resources are used responsibly to support our members and activities. Council members evaluate incoming proposals — from new initiatives and events to travel grant applications — helping shape the future of the society.
We're always happy to welcome new volunteers. Whether it's organizing our journal club, managing social media, helping plan in-person events, or supporting another area of SOBLA's work, there are many ways to get involved. If you're interested in contributing, reach out to us at [email protected].
